The physical symptoms of acute anxiety are normally, shortness of breath, choking as if there is something in the throat or chest that is refusing to come out, profuse perspiration, cold and sweaty palms, stomach pain, etc. The mental symptoms could be severe fear, loss of rational thinking, nervousness and irrelevant talk.

How to Control Anxiety Attacks – Fighting Your Fear

Andrew Lim asked: Can you control anxiety attacks?

images-23Many people describe anxiety attacks as a lightning bolt out of a clear blue sky due to the sudden onset of extremely uncomfortable symptoms. Their breathing become rapid, they start gasping for air while their heart starts pounding madly, they feel numb and dizzy. These symptoms can be so intense that they feeling like dieing – literally.

For most, anxiety attacks often occur without warning and with no apparent reason. A person who have no anxiety problems in his whole life may simply start to have one suddenly.

The main problems comes when anxiety attacks start interfering with normal daily activity. For instances, a person may never have difficulties shopping alone, taking a bus or eating in public when they unexpectedly have an “attack” during one of those situation. After that episode, he could be so traumatized by it that he start associating that situation with extreme anxiety and avoid it.

For others, the thought of being alone is enough to trigger another attack itself. They seek security in the company of others and is convinced that their personal safety depends on having someone nearby at all times.

I am sure you will agree that neither situation can be deemed acceptable.

The good new is that anxiety attacks can be controlled and stopped forever. The biggest hurdle is in understanding the myths and facts about anxiety attacks. A large part of their fear of anxiety attacks stem from the myths that it will kill them, which is totally untrue.

Myth: The attacks are caused by my medical problems.

Facts: Anxiety attacks are rarely caused by medical problems. The way you REACT to your medical problems can induce anxiety attacks.

Myth: Anxiety attacks causes me to have heart attack.

Facts: Unless you have an existing heart condition, such attacks DO NOT pose any threats to the heart. You CANNOT have a heart attack due to anxiety.

Myth: Anxiety attacks make me feel like dieing, which it will.

Facts: No matter how great that feeling is or how bad the symptoms are, it doesn’t change this fact – you are NEVER going to die from anxiety attacks.

Not convinced? Seek out the emergency room physician who have seen thousands of people who sincerely believes that they are going to die from anxiety attacks, NONE of them died when they left the hospital.

Do any of these myths applies to you?

To control anxiety attacks and stop it forever, you need to tackle its roots – fear. This irrational fear is the main culprit. The fear of having another anxiety attack, constantly dreading that it will happen again. Its this feeling that causes anxiety attack to occur again and again.

Know that anxiety attack cannot harm you. You feel like having a heart attack, you feel like fainting and dieing. But will it happen? NO! It NEVER happen. Convince yourself of this fact. Know that anxiety attack can never harm you and you have nothing to fear!

Anxiety Attack Symptoms and Solutions

Anne Girder asked: What are the symptoms and solutions for an anxiety attack?

imagesThe symptoms of anxiety attacks can be defined as those feelings we experience when we feel we are in sudden danger. An Anxiety attack can often be a traumatic and scary experience. It is a period of sudden and intense fear or discomfort, typically with an abrupt onset and usually lasting for no more than 10 minutes. Sometimes someone can experience a panic attack all of a sudden without an obvious reason. Most people that experience one attack will usually experience another attack, and those who have recurring attacks, or feel severe anxiety about having another are said to have panic disorder.

Symptoms of a panic or anxiety attack are intense heartbeat, difficulty with breathing, palpitation, feeling sick, excessive sweating and trembling, chest pains, fearful of going crazy or about to die, sudden chills, and the like. Some people may experience different or more anxiety attack symptoms but this does not mean that their condition is far worse or that you are suffering from a different undiagnosed condition. Because we are all different, the symptoms during anxiety attacks can vastly vary. You might not find among the listed anxiety attack symptoms what you are experiencing and it may be tempting to think something is very wrong with you. The above list is just a guide only, as everyone reacts differently.

Anxiety attack may affect your quality of life if not given treatment immediately. As a human being, it is normal that we feel anxiety, worry and fear from time to time due to the things that our complicated lives bring. Anxiety is just a part of life. can help us cope with the stresses we may encounter. If you are in a state of anxiety on a regular basis, it is likely that you are experiencing anxiety attacks.

Anxiety attacks involve a sudden surge of overwhelming fear that comes without warning and without any obvious reason, and importantly it is far more intense than having normal anxiety or the feeling of being stressed. It is said that up to one in every 75 people will experience an anxiety attack at one point in their life.

A common feeling among sufferers of Anxiety is one of impending death, going crazy or losing control of emotions as well as behavior. Anxiety incidents create an overwhelming urge in many people to escape or run away from the place where the attack begins, and they are associated with chest pain or shortness of breath.

A person with a phobia will often experience an anxiety attack as a direct result to the phobia trigger. These anxiety attacks are brief and quickly relieved once the trigger is escaped. In the conditions of chronic anxiety, one anxiety attack can usually turn into another one, leading to a prolonged feeling of fatigue lasting many days.

Anxiety attack usually last for several minutes and is considered one of the most disturbing conditions that anyone can live through in everyday life. The step-by-step onset of anxiety generally follows the same pattern: first, comes the sudden jolt of fear with less or no triggering motivation, and then this will lead to a release of adrenaline (epinephrine), which causes the supposed fight-or-flight response, where the persons body prepares for major physical activity. This results in an increased heart rate, labored breathing or hyperventilation, and sweating. The diaphragm, involved in the action of the lungs, is also a muscle and it can become overly tight. If someone suffers from normal anxiety they often work too hard when breathing. However, if there is hyperanxiety or an anxiety attack, there is overwhelming excitement, and a person may hyperventilate.

Because strenuous activity hardly ever arises, this hyperventilation leads to carbon dioxide levels lowering in the lungs and then the blood, resulting to the shift in the pH of the blood, which will then lead to many of the other symptoms, such as tingling or numbness, dizziness, and lightheadedness.

It is certainly true that an anxiety attack is a serious problem, but before you start believing you have this condition and run to your doctor in panic, stop and take a deep breath! Relax before you actually cause an anxiety attack. Dont start worrying unduly that it may lead to something serious and may affect your daily routine. Take things slowly. In any case, if you think you have this condition, the first thing you should do is see a doctor. If you are diagnosed with anxiety attack condition, appropriate medication and good counseling can bring your life to normal again. If you do not have anxiety disorder you should accept occasionally you will feel anxiety, but this is natural and healthy.

How Anxiety Attack Can Affect Your Life

Jocelyn Snider asked: How do anxiety attacks affect your quality of life?

Anxiety attack may affect your quality of life if not given treatment immediately.

images-15As a human being, it is normal that we feel anxious, worried, and fears from time to time due to the things that our complicated lives bring. Anxiety is just a part of life. It helps us cope with the stresses we may encounter. If you are in a state of anxiety, it is likely that you experience anxiety attack.

Anxiety attack is a sudden surge of overwhelming fear that comes without warning and without any apparent reason and this would usually last for no more than 10 minutes. It is far more intense than having anxiety or the feeling of being stressed out. One in every 75 people worldwide will experience an anxiety attack at one point in his/her life.

Most anxiety sufferers report fear of dying, going crazy or losing control of emotions as well as behavior. The incidents generally provoke a strong urge to escape or run away from the place where the attack begins, and they are associated with chest pain or shortness of breath, and feeling of impending doom

A person with a phobia will often experience an anxiety attack as a direct result to the hung-up trigger. These anxiety attacks are brief and quickly relieved once the trigger is escaped. In the conditions of chronic anxiety, one anxiety attack can usually turn into another one, leading to a nervous fatigue over a period of days.

An anxiety attack has symptoms that often occur suddenly without any apparent cause. The symptoms can be as follows”

-Pounding heartbeat, generally faster in nature

-Increased sweating

-Dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea

-Difficulty breathing

-Tingling and/or numbness in the face

-Dreamlike sensations or perceptual distortions (de-realization)

-Disassociation, the perception that one is not connected to the body and time.

-Fear of losing control and doing something embarrassing

-Fear of dying

-Feeling of impending doom

-Crying, associated to the above symptoms

Anxiety attack usually last for several minutes and is considered one of the most disturbing condition that anyone can live through in everyday life. The way to understand the different symptoms of anxiety attack is: first, comes the sudden jolt of fear with less or no triggering motivation, and then this will lead to a release of adrenaline (epinephrine), which causes the supposed fight-or-flight response, where the person’s body prepares for major physical activity. This results to an increased heart rate, labored breathing or hyperventilation, and sweating. The diaphragm, involved in the action of the lungs, is also a muscle and it can become overly tight. When there is continuous, inferior anxiety, a person frequently works too hard when breathing. However, if there is hyperanxiety or an anxiety attack, there is overwhelming excitement, and a person may hyperventilate.

Because strenuous activity hardly ever arises, the hyperventilation leads to carbon dioxide levels lowering in the lungs and then the blood, resulting to the shift in the pH of the blood, which will then lead to many of the other symptoms, such as tingling or numbness, dizziness, and lightheadedness.

Anxiety attack is a serious condition, but before you start thinking if you have this condition and go running to see a doctor, stop and take a deep breath! Relax before you start having an anxiety attack, even if you actually don’t have it. Don’t take things too hard for it may lead to something serious and may affect your daily routine. Take things lightly. In any case, if you think you have this condition, the first thing you should do is see a doctor. If you are diagnosed with anxiety attack condition, appropriate medication and good counseling can bring your life to normal again. Otherwise, tell yourself to relax and continue to live your life to the fullest.

All About Anxiety Attacks

Jocelyn Snider asked: I need to know as much as possible about anxiety & panic attacks, Please Help!!!

Anxiety attacks can happen anytime, anywhere when you least expect it.

images-3Anxiety is what we always feel when we are in a tense situation, like studying harder for a major exam, rendering a speech in front of many people, or going on a blind date where you don’t know what to expect; even a bride definitely feel anxious on her wedding day (maybe thinking, what if she’ll be stood up by her groom! What a terrifying thought!). If you feel anxious or fear for certain circumstances or things and with logical reasons to be, it is just a normal and rational response. But, if you feel unexpected surges of overwhelming dread that comes without warning and for no reason at all, it is no longer regular anxiety but anxiety attack.

Anxiety attacks are far more intense than having the feeling of being stressed or anxious that most people experience. It is described as a sudden attack of intense fear or feelings of impending fate or disaster that strike without warning and for no apparent reason. And this can be immediately followed by several symptoms. These are caused by a shift in the way the Amygdala, the small organ in the brain which regulates the anxiety response, behaves when confronted with an anxiety provoking thought, sensation or situation. Anxiety attacks occur when a level of anxiety is reached which causes the Adrenalin to produce severe symptoms which reach a peak in just a matter of minutes. The peak of an attack can range anywhere from 5 to 30minutes, but the symptoms may last a little longer. The symptoms of anxiety attacks are completely harmless, although they can be very frightening. Anxiety attacks belong to a group of anxiety disorder, like panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and agoraphobia.

Some of the symptoms of anxiety attack are intense heartbeat, difficulty of breathing, palpitation, nausea, excessive sweating and trembling, chest pains, fearful of going crazy or about to die, sudden chills, and the like. Some people may experience different or more anxiety attack symptoms but this does not mean that their condition is far worse or that you are suffering from different undiagnosed condition. And because we are all different, the symptoms during anxiety attacks can vastly vary. You might not find among the listed anxiety attack symptoms what you are experiencing and you’ll start to think there’s something very wrong with you. The list is just a guide only. Everyone reacts differently.

Anxiety attacks are always a sign of underlying anxiety disorder which itself can be treated successfully with or without having to go through medication or costly therapy. Linden Method offers a cure on panic and anxiety attacks. According to this method, anxiety attacks are not a sign of illness. The way to cure it is to eliminate the causes that trigger anxiety attacks.

Symptoms, Signs, and Triggers of Anxiety Attacks

Amit Mehta asked: What are the symptoms of an anxiety attack?

images-14An anxiety attack is a short period of overwhelming fear that comes on with no warning and for no rational reason. An anxiety attack can be a one-time event, but most often is an ongoing problem. Those who experience regular anxiety attacks (two or more anxiety attacks a month) should go to a doctor. It’s very likely that those who experience that many anxiety attacks have an anxiety or panic disorder. An anxiety attack is also often called a panic attack.

Regular anxiety attacks can prevent the person who experiences them from living a normal, happy life. Anyone of any adult age, from both genders, and of all races and economic backgrounds can have an anxiety attack.

Doctors and caregivers don’t know for sure what brings on an anxiety attack. But studies have shown that there are some health conditions and medications that might cause an anxiety attack. Anxiety attack triggers include withdrawing from alcohol or illegal drugs, a fear of having another anxiety attack, or heredity reasons.

An anxiety attack can bring on feelings of loneliness and a feeling of being out-of-touch with other people. There are other physical and emotional symptoms associated with an anxiety attack, but the main symptom is extreme fear. Some of the physical symptoms that can show up with an anxiety attack can feel like the symptoms of a serious health problem, like a heart attack.

The physical and emotional signs and symptoms of an anxiety attack rarely last longer than 30 minutes. The most intense symptoms of an anxiety attack usually peak within ten minutes. There have been a few rare cases where symptoms of an anxiety attack have lasted for hours.

Even though the physical and emotional signs and symptoms of an anxiety attack might last only minutes, the psychological symptoms can last much longer.

Those who experience anxiety attacks never know when an anxiety attack will hit them. A person might have an anxiety attack once a week. Or a person might have a series of anxiety attacks followed by months and months of no anxiety attacks.

This uncertainty coupled with the actual physical and emotional symptoms of an anxiety attack makes life very challenging for those who have anxiety attacks. Some people become so fearful of an anxiety attack coming at an inappropriate moment that they are afraid to leave their homes. This fear is often called agoraphobia.

The literal definition of agoraphobia is a fear of open spaces. This definition is often misleading and confusing, especially when used in reference to anxiety attacks. People experience anxiety attacks in all situations and statistically very few experience anxiety attacks in open spaces.

Agoraphobia often begins when a person experiences an anxiety attack in a specific situation. Even after a diagnosis is made and treatment begins, the person often convinces him or herself that the situation that caused an out-of-the-blue anxiety attack will cause numerous future anxiety attacks. So, naturally, the person avoids that situation.

Anxiety attack causing agoraphobia is two times more common in women than men. Well-known American celebrities who have admitted to experiencing agoraphobia related panic attacks include Kim Basinger and Barbara Streisand.

The First two Anxiety and Panic Attack Treatments

Anxiety and Panic Attack Treatments

Anxiety & Panic attacks are treatable. There are four main treatment options. Any one of these or a combination may be used. Everyone is different, so find what works best for you:

 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

 Psychotherapy

 Medications

 Self Help

In this post I will be discussing the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Psychotherapy. In the next post I will discuss Medications and Self Help.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy is often viewed as the most effective form of treatment for Anxiety or Panic attacks. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of psychotherapy that emphasizes the importance of how we feel and what we do. For example, if you had a Anxiety or Panic attack while at work, what is the worst thing that could really happen? While you might have to leave work, you are not likely to have a heart attack or faint. Once you learn and know that nothing really bad is going to happen to you, the experience of anxiety or panic becomes less terrifying.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is an incredible process where psychological problems are treated through communication and relationship factors between you and your therapist. But, it is much more than talking out your problems. It is based on therapeutic principles, structure and technique. The relationship between your therapist and you is different than any other relationship. You can be totally honest and know that this information will not be told to anyone else. Your therapist is not judging you, he or she is only there to help. This is important to remember so that you can get to the root of your problem without worrying about offending or hurting someone else’s feelings.

When sufferers are asked “What exactly does a panic attack feel like?” The best way that they have been able to describe it is this:

You are driving down the road in your car and somebody pulls out in front of you. You
swerve and narrowly miss them avoiding an accident.

NOW…after all this has happened, what do you feel? Adrenaline, heart pounding in
your ears, shortness of breath, ANXIETY & PANIC. These feelings are what a person having an anxiety or Panic Attack feels like, but, instead of the brief few seconds you feel it, these feelings will go on anywhere from a few minutes to sometimes hours for a person having a severe Anxiety or Panic attack.
Although panic attacks can significantly affect your quality of life, there are treatment
options available. Each person is unique and will need to figure out what course of
treatment is best for them.
