Most people have some episodes of anxiety at some point in their life. For some, this may be a regular occurence, but it doesn’t affect their functioning. For others, it becomes a real problem. Physical and mental symptoms can cause an impairment in daily function, and when this condition persists for a certain period of time, it’s usually diagnosed as an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are difficult to handle, and for those who experience manic anxiety, it’s even more difficult.
Manic anxiety episodes display some of the classic hallmarks of generalized anxiety disorder, but the symptoms tend to cluster around the “manic” tendencies. What does this mean? A person who is experiencing a manic episode experiences a prolonged period of time of an elevated mood, sometimes accompanied by irrational and/or racing thoughts, difficulty with concentration, irritability, physical agitation, and a reduced need for sleep. This episode usually lasts for a week or more in order to be clinically diagnosed. Treatment options vary and may include medication, therapy, and/or lifestyle changes. Medications such as Xanax or Valium provide immediate relief, while anti-depressants tend to be less habit-forming but make take longer to become effective. Counseling or behavior therapy usually helps a person discover the triggers for these manic episodes and develop a plan for defeating them. Still other lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise, and peer support groups, may be helpful cures, as well.
