Acute anxiety could be the result of sudden panic attacks, and is a psychiatric condition. A person who is a victim of a panic attack could be consumed by sudden fear, fear of the people around or something unknown will display withdrawal symptoms and become uncommunicative, temperamental and at times may behave in a very strange manner that might become uncontrollable. Many people are more prone to panic attacks or acute anxieties, which could lead to paranoia too. Acute anxiety may last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. The physical symptoms of acute anxiety are normally, shortness of breath, choking as if there is something in the throat or chest that is refusing to come out, profuse perspiration, cold and sweaty palms, stomach pain, etc. The mental symptoms could be severe fear, loss of rational thinking, nervousness and irrelevant talk.
Acute anxiety and panic attacks are not life threatening and can be overcome to an appreciable extent but the patient should be willing to cooperate and keen to come out of it. A good doctor and a counselor should be taken into confidence. Drugs may help but they are mere suppressants. Patients should seek the help of family, friends and self-help groups to help overcome acute anxiety. Good food, exercise, meditation, engaging in productive work, and gaining self-belief will go a long way in curing panic attacks and acute anxieties.
